Building 1 is a fully operational two storey Police HQ building. Basement level houses a firing range, associated armoury and locker rooms and ICT equipment storage rooms.
Extensive use of the firing range over a number of years coupled with inadequate ventilation had resulted in a high build-up of lead deposits and unburnt propellants within the Range.
Jackson Environmental were awarded the contract to undertake lead decontamination of the Basement.
The scope of work was to soft strip the 540m³ firing range, locker room and access corridor and remove lead contamination.
The Police required 24/7 uninterrupted access into the armoury.
Our proposed a method of carrying out the work using fully controlled asbestos removal controls was accepted by our Client.
The presence of unburnt propellants had resulted in a potentially explosive atmosphere within the Range therefore all equipment used had to be ATEX compliant.
The work and was carried out using ‘spark free’ methods. Stud walls, suspended ceilings, rubber mat floor coverings, ventilation equipment and steel bullet catcher were removed back to the original brick walls & concrete surfaces.
Lead dust was removed as work progressed and lead residues were removed from retained surfaces.
On completion, we partnered with a UKAS accreted laboratory to carry out a regime of air and surface lead sampling.
All results were within acceptable limits.
The contract was completed in 5 weeks.
